ANCESTRY.COM FREE RECORD COLLECTIONS

At our GENCOM meeting this Sunday, the presentation and discussion will be about the electronic databases that are provided by our Broadmoor Branch Library Genealogy Department.  The focus of the program will be on the MyHeritage Library Edition database, a new service provided by the library that can be accessed free at the library and remotely from the comfort of your home.

As I was researching for the presentation, I found some information about Ancestry.com of which I was not aware.  Ancestry Library Edition is offered free of charge at the library but is not accessible from home.  But, did you know that Ancestry.com has over seven hundred FREE indexed record collections that are available by simply obtaining a FREE guest registration.  Most of the record collections are indexes, but they are still free to search and use.  Information on obtaining a free guest registration can be found at Ancestry Guest Registration.  This registration provides not only access to the Free Index Collection Page, but to other free services as well.

Here is a list of some of the 700 free indexed record collections.  Note that this list will change from time to time.

COMPUTER CLASSES AT BROADMOOR LIBRARY

The Broadmoor Library is providing quite a variety of computer classes in July. As genealogists/family historians we depend on being able to utilize computer technology in our research. We always have some questions and need a refresher course on using our computer to enhance our research techniques.

Please note that you must register to reserve a spot in these classes and you must have access to a valid email account.

FAMILY TREE DNA AUTOSOMAL TEST SALE

https://www.familytreedna.com/family-finder-compare.aspx?utm_campaign=website&utm_source=sendgrid.com&utm_medium=email

Celebrate this Father's Day with a Family Finder test.  Click here to purchase Family Finder for $89!

Act now, this offer is valid beginning Friday, 6/19/2015 at 12:01 am CST and ending Sunday, 6/21/2015 at 11:59 pm CST.

Please read my post from last Monday 15 June on the test sale from Ancestry.  I give information on saving even more by testing first with Ancestry and transferring your test results to FTDNA for only $39.  The advantage to this is that you are comparing to both companies' testing data base, and more comparisons means more matches and more DNA cousins.  If you have any questions email me.

ANCESTRYDNA AUTOSOMAL TEST SALE

http://home.ancestry.com/

Ancestry.com has a sale on their autosomal AncestryDNA test until Father’s Day 21 June.  This makes the cost of the test $89 plus $9.95 shipping.  If you take the AncestryDNA test at this price, you can then transfer your raw data to FTDNA for $39 and have matching comparisons with testers in both databases.  Testing in this way will compare your test results in two databases, therefore more comparisons and matches.  If you do not understand the advantages of testing with both companies click HERE to read an excellent article on “Why Upload to GEDmatch or FTDNA?”.   The transfer to GEDmatch is free and information on this transfer can be found HERE (Note! GEDmatch is down at present time due to server problems but should be up soon).

The test that is on sale at AncestryDNA is not the y-DNA test that traces the male surname line but it will help you discover living cousins with which you have a common ancestor.  FTDNA is the only company that offers the y-DNA test and I expect it to be on sale for Father’s day.  I will let you know as soon as I found out any information on a sale.
