DNA TEST SALES FOR NATIONAL DNA DAY

NATIONAL DNA DAY is April 25^th and commemorates the day in 1953 when a paper detailing the structure of DNA as a double helix was published in Nature magazine.  It also recognizes the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003.

In celebration of these accomplishments both AncestryDNA and FamilyTreeDNA are having a sale on all of their DNA tests for genealogy.  The following is information on the sales and links to the sites (Click on the company name to go to the site):

ANCESTRYDNA

The normal price for the Ancestry autosomal DNA test is $99.  During this sale the price has been reduced to $79.

FAMILYTREEDNA

All of FTDNA’s DNA tests are on sale at the prices listed above.

GENCOM Recommendations:

1.      If you want to take the Y-DNA (male line) or mt-DNA (female line) test, you will need to test with FTDNA since they are the only company offering these tests.  For the Y-DNA test I would recommend the Y37 marker test.  You will be able to upgrade later by just paying the price difference without taking another test.

2.      If you want to take the Autosomal DNA test (AncestryDNA on Ancestry or FamilyFinder on FTDNA), I recommend the following:

a.       Take the AncestryDNA test from Ancestry for the sale price of $79.  I recommend using Ancestry because of the new tools that have recently been added making it easier to get started using the results in your genealogy research.

b.      Once you have the results from Ancestry you have the option of transferring your raw data to FTDNA for only $39.  This is the same as taking the DNA test on FTDNA for a greatly reduced price.  The advantages to this transfer is that FTDNA has more advanced tools to use in your research and your DNA will be compared to their database and give you more cousin matches.

FAMILYTREE DNA POPULATION FINDER UPDATE TO BE RELEASED SOON

Esther and I have received this notice of this update on several of our kinfolks test kits that we are administering but so far have not received a notice on our own person test kit.  Keep on the lookout for this new update from FamilyTree DNA.  Will be interesting to see how this compares to AncestryDNA and 23andMe.
