NEW AND UPDATED RECORD COLLECTIONS ON FAMILYSEARCH.ORG AND ANCESTRY.COM

The following record collections are shown as new or updated on FamilySearch.org and Ancestry.com.

My Joneses came from Alabama, so of particular interest to me were the updates on Alabama Marriage Records.  The last update on the 1809-1950 County Marriages was on 14 July 2015 with 1,225,304 records.  This update, only a week later shows 2,310,900 records - nearly a 100% increase.  I need to spend time and search these records again to see if there have been any Joneses added.

Happy ancestor hunting.

NEWBERRY - BRING BACK THE INTERACTIVE MAP

If you use the interactive county map at the Newberry Library website, this is an important message from the Legal Genealogist.

http://publications.newberry.org/ahcbp/
Quoting from her BLOG:

"As you can see, right now, if you go to the Newberry Library website and go to the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries page, you get a message right at the top.
One that makes my heart stop dead in its tracks.
Please note: the interactive map portion of this site is temporarily unavailable.
And, underneath that, a box for data entry with the comment “Enter email address to receive notification when this functionality has been restored.”
Now any time you see a message like this, you know that the most likely situation is that there’s some sort of technical glitch that will take some serious resources to fix… and that those serious resources won’t be committed unless and until the site has evidence that the missing functionality is important to the site’s users.
In other words, if we don’t tell the Newberry Library that we really really want and need this functionality back, we may well lose it forever.
So you know what we need to do, right?
You got it: head right over to the Newberry Library website, to the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries page, and add your email address to the list of those that need to be notified “when this functionality has been restored.”"

Happy ancestor hunting.

HOW ACCURATE ARE THE ADMIXTURE OR ETHNICITY RESULTS ON DNA TEST?

At our last DNA Interest Group we became involved in a discussion about the admixture or ethnicity percentages that are shown on DNA test results.  My advice to most people is to take the results with a grain of salt.  The results are not worthless but may, with close analysis, reveal information about your ethnicity.  The following blog by The Legal Genealogist, Judy Russell explains very well why I make this statement.  This blog is speaking about African inheritance but this is true of any other inheritance such as Native American, French, etc.

I expect these estimated percentages to become more accurate in the future, but in the present there is much more that can be learned about our ancestors by spending time on y-DNA and Autosomal DNA test analysis.  Come to our GENCOM meeting on 26 July and learn more about DNA and Genetic Genealogy.

Happy ancestor hunting.
