WHEN TO CONDUCT MANUAL SEARCHES ON INDEXED RECORDS

SEARCHING INDEXED RECORDS
This summer I have spent a great deal of time indexing and arbitrating digitized records for FamilySearch.org.  This experience has taught me that when we are searching indexed records we need to remember that the indexing was done by another individual.  No matter how experienced and conscientious the indexer is there are still errors that are going to be made in interpreting the records.

If you are fairly certain that your ancestor is on a set of records for a certain location and time, you will need to search manually for the individual either line by line or page by page.  This is true whether the records are census records, obituaries, land deeds or any other type of record that has been indexed.  You may not only find your ancestor but other relatives as well.

Happy ancestor hunting.

HOW TO SALVAGE YOUR DNA TEST RESULTS FROM ANCESTRY'S RETIREMENT

I received this notice from Ancestry.com giving details on the retiring of their Y-DNA and mtDNA tests and results from their website and database.  They give detailed information of how to salvage what you can from your test results before they scrap the projects.  Read this carefully and follow the directions to save what you can from these tests for which you paid good money.

Reminder: Your Y-DNA and mtDNA results will no longer be available as of September 30, 2014
A few months ago, we sent a notification that we are retiring the Y-DNA and mtDNA tests and that your results will no longer be available online. The original deadline of September 5 has been extended to September 30 in order to give you extra time to access your results. After September 30, 2014, you will no longer be able to view Y-DNA and mtDNA results on the dna.ancestry.com website.

Important: This does not affect the AncestryDNA autosomal DNA test. We continue to offer the AncestryDNA service and are fully committed to supporting and expanding its’ capabilities. AncestryDNA has a vibrant and growing user community, now over ½ million strong, and a team of 11 Ph.D. scientists dedicated to providing new breakthroughs with DNA for family history.

Preserving your Y-DNA and mtDNA results
To save the results of Y-DNA and mtDNA tests, there are two popular options.
Download your raw DNA data. For instructions on downloading your raw data, please read this guide to downloading your Y-DNA or mtDNA data.

Print your results. For instructions on printing your results, please read this guide to printing your Y-DNA or mtDNA results.

For more information about retiring the Y-DNA and mtDNA testing, please read this article, which includes additional details.

GENCOM DNA SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP MEETING

GENCOM DNA Special Interest Group will meet on Wednesday, 10 September 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the large meeting room of the Broadmoor Branch Library.  Many new and exciting events have happened in the world of Genetic Genealogy and I am sure that many of you have taken tests and discovered new relatives.  At our meeting we will review the basics of the three types of DNA testing and answer questions that anyone has about DNA testing.  If you have taken a DNA test and are having difficulty understanding and analyzing the test results we will be glad to assist you so you may get the most out of your test results.  Bring your kit number and password with you and we will view your results and advise on the best way to work with your results.

We will also be looking at how to work with and understand your X-DNA results, a new feature that has been added to the FamilyTree DNA website.

Hope to see you there.
