I just learned about the new, free state research guides available from  These guides are in PDF file format and can be downloaded using Adobe Reader and saved on you computer hard drive for reference at any time.  The currently available guides are listed below.  Ancestry will be continuing to add states, so keep checking back for the guide to you ancestors state.

I downloaded the Virginia research guide and found a five page document that included information on Virginia history, Virginia Censuses, and a listing of significant dates for Virginia.  There was also information and links for information on Virginia vital records, military resources, and special collections.  Other links included were Library of Virginia, Virginia Historical Society, and Virginia Genealogical Society.
