US Pension Indexes Online at FamilySearch  The following is a list of Military Pension Record Collections that are available on FamilySearch.org United States, Old War Pension Index, 1815-1926 Description Card index to pension files located at the National Archives for service in the Regular Army, Navy or Marine Corps between 1783 and 1861. This collection is part of RG 15 Records of the Veterans Administration and is NARA microfilm publication T316.The event date and place represent the earliest filing of either the veteran or dependent.   United States, War of 1812 Index to Pension Application Files, 1812-1910 Description Name index and images of the jacket-envelope that contains the pension application files located in the National Archives. The envelope will provide soldier name and military service information as well as widow name and pension and bounty land numbers. This collection is part of Record Group 15 Records of the Veterans Administration and is National Archives Microfilm publication M313. United States, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Applications Description Images of revolutionary war pensions. United States, Index to Indian Wars Pension Files, 1892-1926 Description Index and images of card index to pension files located at the National Archives for service in the Indian Wars between 1817 and 1898. The files are part of RG 15 Records of the Veterans Administration and is NARA microfilm publication T318. United States, Mexican War Pension Index, 1887-1926 Description Card index to Mexican War pension files located at the National Archives for service between 1846 and 1848. These records are a part of RG 15 Records of the Veterans Administration and are NARA microfilm publication T317. The event date and place represent the earliest filing of either the veteran or widow. United States, General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934 Description Images of the name index to pension files held at the National Archives. The files relate to service between 1861 and 1916. Most of the files are for Union Civil War service but also include the War with Spain, Philippine Insurrection, Boxer Rebellion and Regular U.S. military forces. These records are a part of RG 15 Records of the Veterans Administration and are NARA microfilm publication T288. The event date and place represent the earliest filing of either the veteran,widow or minor. Currently this collection is 59% complete. Additional records will be added as they are completed. These record collections are all indexes.  Some of the actual images of the records are free on FamilySearch and some require a subscription to Fold3 to view the image.  Remember, Fold3 is free to use at the Broadmoor Branch Library. The War of 1812 Index and the General Index to Pension Files are not complete and additional records are being added as they are completed.  I will post on this blog as the records are added, so keep checking back. MOUSE SCANNER

A new toy for us technology nerds - a mouse scanner!

 

I saw this in Wal-Mart and could not believe what the package said this little tool would do, so I went home and googled it.  Check out these two links with information about this new mouse scanner:

It will do everything that the ad and the video say that it will.  It will scan and stitch images as you scan and has a great OCR feature that will scan text and import into Word.  The  mouse function has some problems but I found you could use your own mouse when both are plugged in.  This mouse scanner plugs into a usb port and requires no batteries.

Both Toni Turk and I have purchased one and can provide information if you have any questions.  Wal-Mart has these on the shelf for $89 and Amazon sells them for $94.

FAMILYSEARCH RECORDS ADDED OR UPDATED APRIL 29-30, 2013

The following FamilySearch records were added or update April 29-30, 2013.
Quite a few United States records were added and update these two days.  These records are in bold print and highlighted.  I found some new records for my ancestors on the Arkansas, First Draft Registration Cards.  These are what I call the old men draft registration and they provide quite a bit of information about your ancestor.  These records are not indexed so you will have to browse.  With a little practice, browsing records is not difficult.

REDESIGN OF FAMILYSEARCH.ORG WEBSITE

The new face of the FamilySearch.org web site has been out a week and in my personal opinion - I like it!  As with any changes in the world of computers there is a learning curve when things change.  Here are some hints on finding a couple of pages and some information video links that can help in getting around the new designed site.

The first things I had trouble finding were the Wiki and the Learning Center.

You can access the Wiki from the home page as follows:
     Click the "Search" link located at the top of the main banner
     On the Search Page, click the Wiki link located at the top of the page

The Learning Center can be accessed in a similar manner from the home page:
     Click the "Live Help" icon on the banner
     Click the "Get Help" image
     Click on "Learning Center" located at the top of the page

These are the easiest ways to get to these pages I have found, but this may change without notice.  FamilySearch.org changes daily. The best way to keep up to date on the changes is to check out the FamilySearch Blog link or by clicking on the link "Blog" at the bottom of the home page.

FamilySearch is rolling out new product videos in conjunction with the launch of the new FamilySearch website. These videos are less than 3 minutes long and show how a new user can have success using each of the new features of the site. Look for these videos on the Learning Center of familysearch.org.

There is a free video available on Legacy Family Tree Webinars that is excellent for learning about how to get around and use the new website.  On the Legacy page click on "View Now What's New At Family Search".  The video is free and you do not have to be logged in to watch the video.
