Look for more new records to be added in the future.  This should increase the number of "shakey leaves" on our family trees in Ancestry.com.  I will keep you updated on this website.

Coming Soon to Ancestry.com Search—More Control Over Your Results!

This was just posted on Ancestry.com Blog - Keep an eye out for this new feature - It should help with our searches.

Posted by Ancestry.com on February 24, 2014 in Ancestry.com Blog

A new sliding control is coming to the Ancestry search function over the next couple of weeks. Located in the upper-left corner of the search results page, it will make it easy to quickly broaden or narrow your search results. Don’t see the search results you were expecting? Simply drag one or more sliders from left to right to quickly modify your results. The slider position shows how closely your search terms should be matched. With all the sliders to the left, your results are matched at the broadest level, and moving one or more sliders to the right will display more exact matches. - See more at: http://blogs.ancestry.com/ancestry/2014/02/24/coming-soon-to-search-more-control-over-your-results/#sthash.kiI4N6oa.dpuf

CROWDSOURCING

Crowdsourcing is a new word that we hear in many genealogical circles. It is sometimes hard to grasp the real meaning about what crowdsourcing means. To me it is collaboration: the act of working together with one or more people in order to achieve something. Us senior citizens remember in the 1980's the mailing lists, message boards and groups/communities that we used for communication in the early days of computers. This FamilySearch Blog (click here) is an excellent article that reminds us that the information that was put on these lists, boards and groups are still in existence today and are a valuable tool for genealogy research. Do not overlook these sources because of all the more modern way of crowdsourcing.

NEW AND UPDATED RECORDS ON FAMILYSEARCH AND ANCESTRY

The following records are shown as added or updated on FamilySearch.org and Ancestry.com today.

I post the updated and added records for FamilySearch and Ancestry on this blog each time I find they have added or updated records.  I check both sites daily and post them as soon as I find them.  The purpose of this is to give the followers of my blog an easy way to know when records are added.  I have found several newly digitized records for my ancestors in Arkansas and Louisiana that I would not have to known to look for without keeping up with these additions.  If you see a new or updated record for an area that you are researching, click on it and see what you find.  If you have found or do find any records, why not make a comment on the blog?

THE DOUBLE "S"

In many of the 19th century and earlier English documents you encounter in your research, you will find a letter that looks like a very odd shaped letter "p".  In this time period a double "s" was written in such a way that it resembles a odd shaped modern "p".  If you find a word that does not look right with a "p" in this location try an "ss" and see if that helps.

Thanks to my daughter Lynne Jones for enlightening me to this oddity in early American documents.  I have run across this many time when indexing records for FamilySearch.

Online Historical Newspapers

Click on the screenshot below to look at the Penn Libraries list of free historical newspaper websites.  The website contains a huge list of websites that have historical newspapers available online.  Many of the newspapers are very old.  I found an old newspaper from Ruston that I did not know existed.

VALENTINE DAY PROJECT

This started out as a simple Valentine Day project to find out who had the longest marriage in my paternal and maternal direct line ancestors.  As always I got carried away with my spreadsheet, and worked all afternoon on it.  I think these are very interesting spreadsheets that provide many facts about my direct line ancestors in one place.  As you can see next year Esther and I will will celebrate our 54th wedding anniversary and pass my Jones' grandparents. This will give us the title of having the longest marriage in the Jones and Colvin lines.  I challenge all of you genealogist researchers to find the longest marriage in their direct lines and send me a comment on this blog.

MILITARY RESEARCH HELP

If you are doing military research, this would be a handy chart to have by your side.

When I did Civil War research I used this to go through my family tree and list all of the ancestors that were born between the dates and listed them. That way I had information on which ancestors I needed to look for on Fold3.com.

You can open this photo or save it to your computer so that you can enlarge to make it easier to read.
