SKETCHING OUR ANCESTORS HOUSE

This is from a post on Michael John Neill's blog Genealogy Tip of the Day:

"THE INSIDE OF GRANDMA'S HOUSE
If Grandma's house is still standing (or even if it isn't), have you considered drawing a map showing the rooms in the house, the relative location of any outbuildings, etc.? Even if your scale isn't perfect, a drawing is better than no drawing."

This is something that we as family historians need to consider doing to leave to our descendants.  I have made sketches of my parent's and grandparent's houses showing what was in each room of the house.  I have labeled some of the rooms and fixtures that I remember being there before the houses were torn down.  The sketches are not to scale and are drawn freehand - nothing fancy just a simple floor plan so they will know what the house was like.

Making these sketches is a great way to bring back memories that can be developed into ideas for the stories you write for your descendants.  I would certainly love to have sketches and stories from my parents and grandparents about some of the details of their lives when they were young.  I do have some sketches that outline and give some details on of the Jones' family land in Arkansas.  These sketches have helped me in much of my genealogy research in Arkansas.

My next project in this area will be to sketch the Colvin and Jones Grocery store in Unionville and give some of the details of how the outside and inside of the store changed during by youth.

TOP GENEALOGY WEBSITES OF 2014 FROM GENEALOGYINTIME.COM

GenealogyInTime Magazine has put together a world wide list of the top 100 most popular genealogy websites.  This is an extensive and exhaustive list that is a well-researched and global in scale.  There are nine pages of information about the websites and the methodology that was used to determine the ranking.   When searching the internet for your ancestors this list should be by your computer.  I use many of the sites on the list but will be checking out some of the ones with which I am not familiar.  The URL for the list is Top 100 Genealogy Websites for 2014.

FREE STATE RESEARCH GUIDES FROM ANCESTRY.COM

I just learned about the new, free state research guides available from Ancestry.com.  These guides are in PDF file format and can be downloaded using Adobe Reader and saved on you computer hard drive for reference at any time.  The currently available guides are listed below.  Ancestry will be continuing to add states, so keep checking back for the guide to you ancestors state.

I downloaded the Virginia research guide and found a five page document that included information on Virginia history, Virginia Censuses, and a listing of significant dates for Virginia.  There was also information and links for information on Virginia vital records, military resources, and special collections.  Other links included were Library of Virginia, Virginia Historical Society, and Virginia Genealogical Society.

Free State Research Guides
Learning about the history and what resources are available for the places your ancestor lived can give your research a solid boost. Our state research guide series includes historical background, a chronology, helpful information on census and vital record availability, highlighted collection for that place on Ancestry.com, and links to important resources beyond Ancestry.com.
We'll be continuing to add states throughout 2014, so if we don't have your ancestor's state yet, stay tuned.

LARGE AMOUNT OF RECORDS NEW AND UPDATED ON ANCESTRY

Two days ago ancestry.com listed a huge amount of new and updated records (172 US Record Collections) on their website.  This may be some of the records that resulted from the new working agreement they have with familysearch.org.  Do not know for sure but this is certainly a large number of record collection to look through on ancestry.com.  Rather than post all of the new collections on this website, I am showing details on how to access these record collections on ancestry.com:

1.  Log into ancestry.com
2  On drop-down menu under "search" click on "card catalog"
3.  In left column menu click on Filter by Location "USA"
4.  On right side of page under "Sort By" click on "date updated"

This will show all of the most recent new and updated records.  Note that there are three pages of collections.  Browse through the records and have fun doing your ancestor hunting.

A subscription to ancestry.com is required to access these records or you can visit Broadmoor Library and take advantage of their free access to ancestry.com.

NEW AND UPDATED RECORDS ON FOLD3

I just received the information below from Fold3.com on how to search for and find new and updated records on their website.  The records that are listed as new and updated are shown at the bottom of this post.  I will keep an eye on this and keep you up to date on these records.

Happy ancestor hunting.

Where to Find New and Updated Records

There are hundreds of millions of images on Fold3 and hundreds of record titles, so how do you know if something new has been added that might be pertinent to your interests? There are a couple ways to find new or updated titles, and there is also a "Watch" button for both titles and searches so you are notified when one of your favorites has been added to.
To see which titles have been added or updated most recently, go to the Search drop-down menu at the top of any Fold3 page. Click on the down arrow to find links to search or browse records, and also for a list of all Records on Fold3 where you can further sort by "new & updated." There’s also a shortcut to this page via the narrow orange banner on the right of the home page with the number of records "added last month." Click that banner and you'll be taken directly to the "new & updated" list.
If you perform the same searches often for people, events, or topics, scroll down the middle column on the search results page to find "Added in the past." There you'll find filters to access what's been added in the past month, 3 months, 6 months, or year. You can also save your favorite searches by using the "Watch" button on the search results page. When an image is added that matches your search criteria, you'll receive an email notification.
Just because a title is 100% complete doesn't mean you won't find something new. Even though Fold3 may not be adding more images to that title, members are continually adding spotlights, annotations, and comments that may reveal a topic or person you're interested in. To see more, click on a title's information icon or, in the viewer, click the link to a publication title in "About image."
For example, Civil War service records for Union troops from Maryland are marked as 100% complete on this page, but you will see recent discoveries listed there, too. You can "Watch" any publication to receive email updates whenever another discovery is made. Likewise, if you find a publication that is not complete, you can click the "Watch" button to get updates when new record images are added to that title. Learn more about watches in the Fold3 Training Center.
As you can see, there are many ways to find new and updated documents and contributed content on Fold3. Find the methods that work best for you and enjoy making your own discoveries on Fold3.
